FOR BETTER PUBLIC HEALTH

How to better prevent and manage chronic diseases?

24. 12. 2015
Chronic diseases, like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke and mental conditions, are everyone's business. Many people will suffer from at least one of them in a lifetime.

Like many other chronic diseases also type 2 diabetes is preventable, or its onset can be delayed, where early detection and timely treatment play crucial role. Thus we can prevent later complications of the disease. Namely, in developed world diabetes remains a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, lower limb amputations and cardiovascular disease.

70-80% of EU healthcare budgets are spent on treatment, and a mere 3% of these on prevention. Therefore better health policies are needed to reduce the burden of chronic diseases and improve the well-being of citizens.
